How to Choose the Perfect Prom
or Wedding Hair Style for your Face Shape

FACE SHAPE
Ordinary or
Extraordinary?
More than anything,
even your dress,
and accessories,
the right prom hair style
will say: You look
absolutely fabulous!
Learn just two
attributes about your facial
features and you
will never again have
a problem finding
the perfect hair style, for
prom, homecoming or
even casual wear!
Proportion is the
relationship between the length and the width of your
face. Choose your hair style according to your facial
proportions. Follow the guidelines here to find whether
your facial structure is oblong, oval or round.
Let the Mirror
Be Your New Best Friend
There are actually
several methods for finding the proportions of your
face. The method we will use now is the mirror method.
Get the help of a trusted friend, who can assist you
with the calculations. You can also use a photo of
yourself facing straight into the camera. like the model
above. It won't matter if it is a small photo, what we
are looking for is proportion and that does not change
with the size of the photo. You will need, however to
take an accurate measurement, so the larger the photo
the easier this will be.
The average perfectly proportioned face is 1 and 1/2 times
longer than the width. What we are trying to determine
here is to what extent does your face vary from the
norm. Remember, a perfectly proportioned face is very
rare, you need to know your structure only for the
purposes of enhancing your features with the very best
formal or casual hair styles and the right accessories.
How to Find Out Your FACE SHAPE
Directions:
Stand directly in
front of a mirror, so you can see your entire face and
hair line. Remain very still, so you can take an accurate
measurement. Do not sway forward or backward or from
side to side. Pull your hair back totally away from
your face and neck so you can determine your true bone
structure.
Length
First, place a dot
onto the mirror, at the uppermost point where your hair
meets your forehead. Next, place a dot onto the mirror
where the bottom of your chin show in the mirror.
Width
Now, place a dot
onto the mirror where each of your cheeks are at their
widest point. This is usually at the same level as the
top of your ears.
These two
measurements are very important. Write them down.
Length ______
Width ______
Now, we are going
to make a simple but very important calculation. You
will be glad you paid attention in ALGEBRA Class.

calculator the number you just wrote down for width

Results
Your face is OBLONG
if you are between .60-.69
Your face is longer
than average, you may have a high forehead or a longer
chin. You have either:
* An oblong
face with a curved jaw
* An oblong
face with a square jaw (see section on jawline below)
If you have a
narrow, long face, avoid pulling the hair tightly back
away from the face, or letting it hang straight down the
sides of the face. Balance with a style that adds lots
of fullness at the side and not so much on the top of
the head. Surround the face with wisps and curls if you
plan to updo or if you do wear it down, that has
plenty of waves or curls or volume at the sides. Bangs
will help balance your high forehead Pictures of easy
formal hair styles for prom or homecoming.
Your face is OVAL
if you are between .70-.79
Your length is at
or close to 1 and 1/2 times the width. Your shape is
average. You either have:
* An oval face
with a curved jaw or
* An oval face
with a square jaw (see section on jawline below)
When the hair is
pulled back away from the face the forehead and the chin
are about the same proportions as that of an upside down
egg. Luckily the girl with the oval face can choose
almost any style she wants. Of course, you still must
take into account your personality and lifestyle, your
hair type and your body type. Or you can try this free
demo to see which hair style will transform you into a
glamour gal at homecoming or prom.
Your face is ROUND
if you are between .80-.89
Your is considered
round if your length is shorter than average. You will
have either:
* A round face
with a curved jaw or
* A round face
with a square jaw (see section on jawline below)
A round face is not
exactly round, it is about as wide as it is long. If you
have fuller cheeks, and your jaw line is softly
curved, so you want to avoid lots of
fluffiness/fullness around the sides of your face, which
will make your face look rounder.
Your goal is to balance the lines of your round face by
elongating it. If you have this same proportion but
your jaw is angular you have a square face.
Either way, your face shape lends itself well to an updo,
with soft wisps around the temple forehead and upper
cheek. Think upswept lines for long or short hair with
some height on top and very little or no volume on the
sides.

* Your jawline
is round if there is a smooth transition from the ears
to the chin. Wear earrings that are angular or
looooooong
to offset the roundness.
Chinline Be aware
of your chinline when choosing your earrings! Wear
earrings in the shape that is opposite your chin shape.
You will have either:
* A round
chinline or
* A pointed
chin
As a general rule,
avoid duplicating the face shape with the hair shape. If
you have a round face, don't settle on a round pouf
hairdo just because you like it on the model; it will
only make your face look unusually round. Find
something more angular and blunt. Likewise, balance for
a longish face is easy to do with a short full cut and
style, rather than long and straight
Square face
Your main goal when
getting ready for a special occasion, such as prom or
weddings is to create the illusion of softness to
your overall look. Encourage the eye away from the sharp
jaw-line by choosing a hair style that is curly or wavy.
